As expected, AFI’s list of films is pretty Hollywood-friendly. Mostly safe choices. The edgiest film on there is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, while films that received lukewarm reviews such as J. Edgar and The Help still made the cut. It may come as a bit of a surprise that the silent film throwback The Artist isn’t included, since that seems tailor-made for AFI — but it’s ineligible (it is the American Film Institute, after all). What this really means is more good news for the much-praised The Descendants, Hugo, The Tree Of Life, and War Horse, and to a slightly lesser extent, The Help and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as Oscar contenders.
As for TV, well, any list that recognizes Breaking Bad is all right by me.
